Our approach

Patience, energy, and genuine love for the sport.

Whether you’re a first-time skater trying to find your balance or a returning skater brushing off years of dust, we teach roller skating the same way we run our events — with patience, energy, and genuine love for what we’re doing.

We come to your school, community center, backyard, or venue. All you need is a smooth surface and a group of ready-to-learn skaters.

The curriculum

A framework that meets skaters where they are.

Beginner level

  • Standing up and getting balanced
  • The correct skating position
  • Marching, then rolling
  • Falling safely — yes, everyone falls, and we teach how
  • Stopping (T-stop, plow stop)

Intermediate level

  • Backwards skating
  • Crossovers (skating in a circle without tripping)
  • Turning and pivoting
  • Building speed with control
  • Skating with music and rhythm

Advanced level

  • Jumps and spins
  • Skating tricks
  • Dance-skating basics
  • Roller derby fundamentals (with league connection to Monterey Bay Roller Derby)

We adapt to each group’s skill level — first-time skaters get patient beginner instruction; experienced skaters get pushed to level up.

Common lesson questions.

Do I need my own skates?

No. We bring rental skates in all sizes. If you have your own skates, you’re welcome to use them.

What if I’ve never skated before at all?

Perfect. Beginners are our specialty. We start with standing up and marching — no experience needed, no embarrassment allowed.

Can I take lessons if I’ve had a bad experience with skating before?

Absolutely. We hear this often, and every time the outcome is the same — with proper instruction, most people find that their previous bad experience was really about not having the right teacher.

About your instructors.

Lessons are taught by Max Troyer and Morgan Goyette. Max grew up in a roller skating rink and has been skating for 40+ years; he was a founding referee of Monterey Bay Roller Derby and helped establish the league’s WFTDA credentials. Morgan has been skating derby with MBRD for seven years and brings a coach’s patience to every lesson — her background as a professional nanny means she’s especially good with kids.
